Digital publishing is the future. The proliferation of eBook
readers and digital content is transforming the publishing world.
Publishers are adopting two strategies in this digital world.
Many are selling digital products that are accessed by readers -
such as the Kindle, Sony eReader or the Barnes & Noble Nook. Others
sell digital files directly to the consumer.
For trade titles, the largest source of digital sales is Amazon's
Kindle.
Many publishers sell downloadable
documents on the web. Go to Amazon and you can purchase PDF files of
popular books.
The key issue that book publishers have
with downloadable files is that users may be able to distribute your
intellectual property to others.
Two products that book publishers use to
distribute content are Adobe Acrobat and E-book. Each product offers
distinct advantages to publishers.
Adobe Acrobat is a universal standard.
If you are not afraid of users copying and distributing your files
use Adobe Acrobat. If your information is time sensitive and is
quickly dated use Adobe Acrobat.
If you want to protect your intellectual
property and can't afford to use Adobe's LiveCycle Server to protect
your documents use E-book software such as eBook Pro.
Adobe Acrobat
Adobe Acrobat PDF files can be protected
in a number of ways;
1. Password Protection - the publisher
may require a users enter a password to open the file.
2. You can control whether your customer
copy or print from a document.
3. You can include an watermark on each page; such as the name of
the purchaser.
4. Adobe LiveCycle Policy Server -
Authors who protect their documents with Adobe LiveCycle Policy
Server can audit what is done with each copy of the document (such
as opening, printing, and editing). They can also change or revoke
access rights at any time. If an author has revoked access to a
document that is protected by Adobe LiveCycle Policy Server, Adobe
Reader or Acrobat informs you that your access rights have been
removed the next time you try to open the document.
Pricing for Adobe Acrobat Professional
starts at $449 retail.
Pricing for components of the Adobe
Adobe LiveCycle Server starts at $50,000 USD.
Adobe Digital Editions
eBook Pro
eBook Pro is an economical alternative
to using the Abobe LiveCycle Policy Server to protect PDF files.
eBook Pro not only protects your book
from printing and copying but also from being opened by unauthorized
persons. The eBook checks with its server to see if it has a valid
active registration code and if the user has not exceeded the
number of registrations which you established for your e-books.
Publishers can disable the eBook
if a customer wants a refund.
Pricing for eBook Pro is $197 plus $0.10
for each registration code after the first 1,000.
